So hi,
Today I’m going to do something that is absolutely abnormal for me
To become normal
Oh no, I am mentally healthy and physically fine. I can hear all right. And I can as well talk non-stop, if blabbling counts, if that’s what you want me to do.
It just so happened that this morning when I woke up and looked up at the ceiling, while the sleep hadn’t yet left my eyes completely, I was slammed with the sudden thought that today might be the day of something.
In that state of mind where you’re yanked from the dreamland and not yet to open the door to the reality, everything is hazy and prompt you to become one of those on the stupid TV show where they make stupid decisions.
So yeah, I thought that idea was perfect. And starting the day like I did yesterday or days before might be a no-go. Because what will ever change if you do the exact same thing as you did for the past that is your entire life?
So instead of grabbing a water bottle and downing half of its content, I make a beeline to the bathroom and brush my teeth.
And I start to feel different then, because I don’t actually brush my teeth until after breakfast since I heard it is better to do so after the amount of sugary fruit and cereal (with milk, of course) that is my usual meal for breakfast traveled down my throat.
I find it refreshing and unexpectedly comforting (I just found on Google it is, after all, better to brush your teeth before breakfast due to the amount of overnight bacteria and that they may react with the food consumed by soaking sugars and acid which can move your schedule with the dentist closer than the appointed date. Damn it)
I’d say I get a good start of the day. I smile brightly at my reflection in the mirror and spot some part of my eyebrows missing. And then those blackheads and pore and crinkles around my eyes. I stop smiling all together which, unforfunately, allow me to notice the plush belly, my flappy arms and flawed skin.
The reflection that is me on the mirror stare blankly at me. I can’t read what the person in front of me is thinking. But then, I realize I’m just being self-conscious. I think that’s okay. Because today will be different.
I smile again, but it looks so strained I have to turn on the faucet and splash some water on my face. It’s cold, but refreshing. It clear my head. I start to plot on how to become normal.
The thing is, while I’m both mentally and physically healthy, I tend to think and act somewhat differently than others. I don’t back away from any arguments. I’m open about my feelings and voice things out when I find they don’t sound right and instead find eyes looking at me strangely in return.
I also find being in a large crowd of people disconcerting which is why I spend most days accompanied by books and Youtube. I talk too, but only when necessary.
Me being uncomfortable with people let them think I’m somewhere between anti-social and abnormal while in actuality I’m just introverted and like listening to people instead of initiating conversation.
Apparently, those (men or women or those belonged to LGBTQ+ community of any ages) who don’t speak loud, don’t take pictures before meals and don’t spend much time on any social media platforms are defined as someone with abnormality.

To heft thing up, I was overweighted when I was younger. I lose some weight of course, but there are still extra kilos on some parts of my body which mark my skin with cracks and uneven lines on my thighs and waist. I feel bare despite the cloths I am wearing.
I was once approached by the salesperson who ran her eyes up and down my body and offered rather unkindly that I might need professional help on my body shape.
I told her to mind her own business. I’m not sure had I wanted to become normal then, I would have still said no to that.
People always know what’s better for you, right? That may be why they talk so big and say something like “you should do this instead of that” or “this is no good for you.

When I ask why is that, they often say; “well, because no one does that.”
And that’s when I start thinking about many things that could have happened if somebody had been eager enough to puff out their chest, saying some cool words like “I’ll show you just that”

I mean, no one would ever have believed in the possibility of equal rights had Rosa Parks not given up seat on the bus for some white person in 1955 which was considered absurd due to the laws and social classes existed where your skin color demanded more than just the difference of the genetic mechanism.
At that time people with dark skin were deemed to be of inferiority and thus, Parks’ behavior led to bemusement and commotion. Bemused because it was not normal to be standing up against the authority. Commotion stirred right after because people of same skin began to see hope and were struck with the possibility of ‘what if’.
So yes, maybe the abnormality is the new normality. But is it?
I blink at my reflection, still losing in my head. That’s when I question myself why I am doing this—to become normal—in the first place.

Which leads me straight to yesterday event. I was scrolling down the clips on Youtube and found the short video consisted of old gay men being interviewed.
They were asked to watch the short animated film ‘In A Heartbeat’ and to give some thoughts afterward. The film was about a boy falling in love with another boy, and as though the heart has its own mind, it’s already followed the other boy anywhere.
When they were face-to-face for the first time, it wasn’t as romantic as they thought it would be since they were not alone. Schoolmates were loitering along the hallway.
They stopped and starred rather pointedly at the two boys who somehow ended up sitting on the floor, each of their hand holding the heart. One of the boy looked ashamed while another barely contained his embarrassment from the other boy’s reaction. He then decided to pull away with the broken heart and left.
The story didn’t end there, of course. The boys found love at last. But still,

It feels weird. I’m not happy, and most importantly, it isn’t me at all.
So what’s the point?
I try to fit in but it turns out too tight and I can’t breathe. Being normal doesn’t suit me, but being me isn’t something the world out there approves either.
It almost costs me. Almost. But then I realize I’m not alone. Physically maybe. But not when I know that there are also some people out there, trying and ending up failing successfully, like me.

There are still people who are of the same kind, though how tiny the community may be, it doesn’t change the fact that if you reach out, they will be there.
It’s okay to not be normal. Because, you know what, it’s totally normal.
Accept your ‘you-ness’ is hard because it is like accepting the fact that you are different from others, that you are a lone black sheep amongst the whites. It is disconcerting, yes, but it’s better than pretending to be someone else entirely.
I am me, and you are you. As long as your quirks don’t bother others, it’s fine just to be the way you are.
