The voices, we hear those often enough
The point is: where are those, of which sometimes berely a whisper and another so loud it like someone is shouting at you, from? Is it from your head or, possibly, from your heart?
One way to recognize it is by how fast your decisions are made
The faster it takes for you to make some decision, it entails that you do it based mostly on your feelings
And if you are taking times deciding on something, you may have heard those little, tiny voices in the back of your head, saying something like; “is that all right?” “That sounds okay” “but…” or “let’s compare this and that one first”. It, as simply as it can get, means you are debating with yourself all the while consulting all the reasons residing in your head.
So…should we listen to which, exactly?
And…to be honest, that isn’t the good enough question to ask
You may have heard of one particular research in which it tested on the patience of the children. The sample of children was seated in front of the savory pastries on the plate. They had to make a crucial decision between swallow it at once or instead wait until the time is up and receive more of that tasty looking treat
The Marshmallow Test
The Marshmallow test is greatly well-known and acceptable. Sure enough that there are kids who put the sweets in their mouths as soon as the door closed and those who sat still, patiently waiting as told
It can be construed that the kids who decided not to wait succumb to their ‘want’, that they don’t even waste any more time to weight the pros and cons. This group of kids doesn’t apply any reasons in their decision-making. They solely went with their feelings at the moment
In the mean time, there is a possibility that those kids waiting until the time counted zero think more logically than, per say, emotionally. They know that if they can go under such condition, there are rewards worth their while
When compare those together, it seems that listening to your head, aka reason, has suddenly releases a crucial punch
However, that punch does look like it has missed out the critical part. There are flaws, even clearly when the research was replicated some time later
The replication of the Marshmallow Test reveals a factor that was once overlooked plays a key to the children’s behavior in the sample. The said factor refers the environments. The surroundings of which the kids have grown and lived in
The children who live in a good neighborhood (middle-class upward) often fee safe and secured. Hence, when they were told to wait, they waited because they know they would always get something out of it
On the other hand, the kids who come from the poor side are filled with uncertainty. They build a shell so hard it is even harder to crack. Those kids whose parents work their butt off don’t have a clue if there would be food for them at dinner. Consequently, they take what their hands can reach. When the survival is difficult enough, it is not that surprising to find the empty plate that once had a tasty treat on.
Thus, the question like “which H we should listen to” is not the question that will lead you the right answer. Instead, it should be better to ask yourself “what is your goal?”
And
“What are the actions that lead to your goal?”
And
“ Is it consequential, fruitful and enough to fulfill your goal?”
For instance, if our goal is to lose 5 kilos in 3 months and suddenly your dear friend offer to take you out for pizza. Things that could happen will be:
Topic for Debate “should I eat pizza or not”
Heart : If you want, then go ahead
Head : You can’t. You are on a DIET
Heart : Just give yourself a reward
Head : If there’s a first, a second will soon follow
Heart: you have endured it so hard, let it loose
Head : Don’t you want to wear that one dress, the one you promise to wear once you successfully lose those extra kilos off?
Heart : Cut the crap and just eat that pizza!
Between the voice of the heart saying “just eat only for today” and that in the head “but if you do just that, surely you will regret”, it seems, however, that following the rational voice looks to be a safe bait.
However, listening only to your head may somehow result in feeling pressured and even more stressful than necessary. It’s true that questioning leads to answers and sometimes to expected and satisfactory results
But we are humans not robots. By following every rational thoughts in every step you make seems to be irrational enough that it will end up slower your paces until it halts those attempts to go forward all together.
Following your heart and listening to your feelings once in a while then is not actually regrettable or shameful as you think it is
Deciding to go for pizza may have you regretted afterward and saying no to such offer and back to a huge bowl of salad can cause you crazy someday. But that doesn’t mean it is the end of your life
To decide on which voice to listen to, you should look at the consequences that would ensue your actions, whether it is another step to your goal, a resting point or a hole that will consume you whole. Be remind now that there is no good or bad decision, whichever choice you made, the consequence is all that you have to admit and deal with
Hence, it may be better to listen to the voices both from your head and heart, compromising them under the designed condition.
If you want to eat pizza, then go for it. But make sure to workout afterward
If you say no, then you have to be sure that you will not lose your mind afterward
You can’t live a life listening to one voice and not to another. Instead, let those voices present themselves and choose wisely which voice you are eager to follow in that particular moment. Sometimes head is right, but then heart doesn’t always make stupid mistakes.
Because you know what, that’s life.
